SKY, Seoseonghan, and Beyond: How Korea Talks About University Prestige
If you see 서연고서성한 in a Korean admissions forum, it may look like one long word. Split it in two and you’ll find six university names. These nicknames tell you something about how people talk about prestige. Choosing a program takes a closer look at what you’ll study and what you can do with it.

A short glossary of university nicknames
These are informal labels used in admissions conversations. The names below decode the shorthand, and their order follows how the labels are often written in those conversations.
| Nickname | Universities named |
|---|---|
| SKY / 서연고 | Seoul National University, Yonsei University, Korea University |
| 서성한 · Seoseonghan | Sogang University, Sungkyunkwan University, Hanyang University |
| 중경외시 · Junggyeongoesi | Chung-Ang University, Kyung Hee University, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, University of Seoul |
| 건동홍 · Geondonghong | Konkuk University, Dongguk University, Hongik University |
| 국숭세단 · Guksung Sedan | Kookmin University, Soongsil University, Sejong University, Dankook University |
Why the shorthand sticks
A few syllables are easy to type in a group chat or admissions forum. They let people invoke a familiar prestige hierarchy without naming every school. But the labels vary by community and leave out many institutions, including specialized science and technology universities. They tell you about the conversation you’re reading more readily than they tell you what a specific program offers.
Compare the program you would actually attend
Imagine two engineering offers. One has a name your relatives recognize right away. The other publishes a curriculum with the robotics electives you want and a senior design project you can see yourself doing. Compare the campus, required courses, access to labs, and teaching language before deciding. For an international applicant, even the difference between English-language admissions materials and Korean-language lectures can change the decision.
Why medicine complicates the prestige ladder
Medicine is tied to a defined professional path, with clinical training and licensing requirements. An applicant set on becoming a doctor may therefore put an offer from a medical program ahead of a more familiar university name in another field. South Korea’s recent debate over medical-school places shows how much attention this path attracts. Seat counts measure capacity. To compare applicant demand, look up applications and places for the same year and admissions track.
Is the university name losing its grip?
A well-known university name still carries weight in many conversations. The broader claim that it matters less nationwide today is harder to establish. It depends on what you measure, from hiring to family expectations. What applicants can do now is compare concrete signals alongside reputation: clinical placements for medicine, studio work for design, and projects, internships, or portfolios for technical and creative careers.
Before you apply
Open the admissions guide for your intake and the department’s course catalogue side by side. Check the campus and teaching language, write down any TOPIK requirement and document deadline, and ask a current student what a typical week looks like. A nickname tells you which schools someone is talking about. Those details tell you what studying there might feel like.
