TOPIK PBT vs IBT: Which Korean Test Should You Take?
If your university accepts both formats, choose the test that gives you an available seat, a score before your deadline, and a format you can practice. PBT is the paper-based test. IBT is the computer-based test administered at a designated test center.

What changes between paper and computer?
Both formats offer TOPIK I and TOPIK II. Choose I or II based on your target level, then compare the formats using their own practice materials and scoring guides.
| What to compare | PBT | IBT |
|---|---|---|
| Test setup | Paper test booklet and answer sheet | Computer at a designated test center |
| TOPIK I (Levels 1–2) | Listening and reading | Listening and reading |
| TOPIK II (Levels 3–6) | Listening, reading, and handwritten responses | Listening, reading, and typed responses |
| Scoring | Use the PBT score table | Use the IBT score table |
Check acceptance and timing before you book
Read the admissions guide for your program and intake. Confirm the accepted format and minimum level, then compare the score announcement date with the deadline for submitting proof. Check your local test center for available formats, registration dates, and seat availability.
Try one writing task both ways
If you need TOPIK II and both options fit your deadline, spend ten minutes handwriting a short Korean response and ten minutes typing a response to a similar prompt. Compare how much you finish and which mistakes cost you time. For IBT, use the official practice interface to get used to Korean keyboard input and reading on screen. For PBT, practice transferring answers to the answer sheet under time pressure.
Make the call using your actual deadline
Suppose the paper test is earlier, but its score comes out after your document deadline. If the university accepts IBT and that result arrives in time, IBT fits the application. If neither score will arrive in time, ask the admissions office whether it accepts late submission or another credential before paying for a seat.
